Michael Joseph Galwey, born 8 October 1966, won the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship in 1986 with the Kerry Gaelic soccer team. He was then turned to rugby union. He is the only recipient of an “All-Ireland”, in rugby union as well as Gaelic football. He is also a County Championship medalist in the Senior, Junior, and Minor grades. Gaillimh is his nickname. It comes from Galway, an Irish city in the Irish language.

Galway was a former Gaelic football player with Kerry before he became a rugby player. Galway was part of the 1986 Kerry All Ireland team, and he played in the semi-final win over Meath. This was his first intercounty success. He won the Munster Under 21 Championship medal that year and played in the All Ireland final, but lost to Donegal. He played in his second and final championship match with Kerry in 1989’s Munster Championship win over Limerick. This was a game he also captained.

Galwey’s involvement in the Irish national squad was more of a mixed bag. Making his debut in 1991 against France, Galwey’s 11-year international career was rarely without controversy. Owing to the selection decisions of various national coaches and selectors, Galwey became the most dropped player in international history. He fought his way back onto the Irish squad, becoming the team’s captain ten years after he made his debut. In the 1993 Five Nations Championship match against England, Galwey rounded off a fine display in the 17–3 defeat by scoring the only try of the game. His efforts were rewarded later that year when he was selected for the Lions tour to New Zealand.
