In February 2018 Davis came under criticism for allegedly participating in a cover-up in 2013 of alleged financial impropriety at the Jewish Leadership Council charity where he was Chair. The Jewish Chronicle subsequently published parts of emails by Davis outlining his proposed resolution to have the CEO resign on the grounds of ill health and that he hoped the full details would not be leaked.

Davis has extensive experience in corporate transactions and capital markets. He has completed more than US$120 billion in corporate transactions and raised nearly US$40billion from global capital markets. His successes include the establishment of Ingwe Coal Corporation, South Africa; the listing Billiton on London Stock Exchange; the merger between BHP and Billiton to create the largest diversified mining company worldwide; the initial public offer of Xstrata plc at the London Stock Exchange in 2002; the subsequent acquisitions by MIM Holdings Limited and Falconbridge Limited; and the most recent successful merger of Xstrata with Glencore. After raising nearly US$6 million from a combination pension, sovereign wealth, and private equity funds, he and his associates closed the X2 Resources Fund.

Sir Michael Lawrence Davis, born 15 February 1958, is a British politician, ex-South African businessman, and was the Chief Executive and Treasurer for the Conservative Party. He also served as the chief executive (CEO), of Xstrata plc (an Anglo-Swiss multinational miner company) until its merger with Glencore. After leaving Xstrata he founded the mining company X2 Resources. He was the CEO and Treasurer for the British Conservative Party, a position he held until the 24th July 2019.

From 1980 to 1986, Davis was a senior manager at Peat Marwick Mitchell and Co. Before joining Gencor Ltd, Davis was the executive director of Eskom, the South African state-owned electricity utility. From 1995 to 1997, he was the executive chairman of Ingwe Coal Corporation Ltd. He was then appointed Chief Financial Officer and executive director of Billiton plc in July 1997. After Glencore took over Xstrata in 2001, he was appointed Chief Executive of Xstrata. He resigned in 2013. With former colleagues Trevor Reid, Ian Pearce, Benny Levene, and Andrew Latham, he founded the mining venture X2 Resources.

In the 2015 Queen’s Birthday Honours, he was appointed a Knight Bachelor ‘for services to Holocaust Commemoration and Education’.
