Serra started a popular satire column entitled “Che Tempo Fa” for L’Unita on 7 June 1992, accompanied by Ellekappa’s comics. He left Cuore’s direction in 1994 and began writing for L’Espresso and La Repubblica. In September 1997, Serra published Il ragazzo mocca, his first novel.
1989 saw the replacement of Tango by Cuore, L’Unita’s satirical supplements. Massimo D’Alema appointed Serra as its director. Cuore began publishing independently weekly in 1991. Serra began writing for Beppe Grillo’s stage and TV shows during the same time. In 1989 he published his first book, a short story collection entitled Il nuovo che avanza (“The advancing new”).

Serra was born in Rome and moved to Milan in 1959. He began working at L’Unita in 1975, the official newspaper of Italy’s Communist Party (PCI). Serra has been a longtime supporter of the left, but he quit the Partito Democratico della Sinistra in 1991 because he disagreed with the party’s direction.
He began writing satire in 1986 for L’Unita’s satiric supplement Tango. In the same year, he won the Satire Prize Forte dei Marmi. He also began collaborating with Mondadori’s weekly Epoca in 1987, but he quit it in 1990 when Silvio Berlusconi, a right-winged tycoon, bought the publisher.
