He was Paul Jewell’s first acquisition of the South Yorkshire club in summer 2000. Wednesday’s first game against Wolverhampton Wanderers in The Premiership on 13 August 2000 was Di Piedi’s debut. He was 19 years old and was a substitute for Gilles De Bilde in the 60th minute. Andy Booth scored a 79th-minute equaliser. Kevin Pressman had been sent off in just the first minute. The Wednesday fans welcomed Di Piedi with open arms. They heard echoes from Benito Carbone and Paolo Di Canio, two of their recent Italian heroes. He displayed signs of being full of energy and pursuing lost causes. What he didn’t have in skill, he made up with his efforts. He scored his first goal for the club, a stunning strike in his first start. It was also the only goal in the game against Grimsby on 26 Aug. While he scored many wonderful goals for The Owls and his last-minute strike against Birmingham City is well-remembered by all who saw it. He ripped his shirt off and placed it on the corner flag, waving it in the air before thousands of Owls fans at St Andrews. He won a contract for four years after his debut season, which was marked by great performances and goals. He suffered injuries in his second season and never achieved the same impact he had earlier. However, he did impress the crowds with his overhead kick against Sunderland in League Cup which saw the team advance against Premiership opponents. He was able to score seven goals in his ten starts, and he made thirty-four substitute appearances on Wednesday.
After spending time at Odd Grenland and Bristol Rovers on loan in 2002 and 2003, he was released from the club. His child became ill and he went back to Italy to play for A.S. Sora. He returned the following year to Bournemouth for a trial after Efan Ekoku recommended him to them. After fracturing his neck during training, he was unable to secure a permanent contract. After a brief spell with APOEL Nicosia, in which he won a Cypriot Super Cup victory, he moved to Sicily to join Gela FC, Serie C2 side. After having completed trials at Gillingham Town and Yeovil Town, he would return to England in 2006, signing for Doncaster Rovers. He made only three appearances, and did not score.
After several years playing across eastern Europe, Asia and South America, Di Piedi signed for newly promoted Gibraltar Premier Division team Mons Calpe in August 2016, in order to help the ambitious club challenge the top two teams of Lincoln Red Imps and Europa. Despite a mid-season spell out with injury, Di Piedi proved a crucial figure Mons Calpe’s first season in the top flight of Gibraltarian football, contributing along with fellow marquee player Hugo Colace to guide them to a comfortable top half finish, after a winter dip in form during his absence saw their UEFA Europa League aspirations fade.
