Michel Lemieux, a Canadian multimedia artist, was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on February 13, 1959. His career includes work in theatre design, installation art and video. In the 1980s, Lemieux was a performer whose work focused on the integration of new media technology into experimental pop music. He has been more successful in creating, designing and directing multimedia theatrical presentations for artists, theatre companies, and events.

He premiered his first work co-created by Victor Pilon in 1990. Pilon has been Lemieux’s creative and business partner for most of his later work. Lemieux and Pilon created Le Souffle de Pythagore (a holographic dance piece) and Le Fallieux’s new performance piece. This was Lemieux’s first collaboration with another performer. In Mid Air was a theatre piece about the imminent transfer of Hong Kong to Chinese control in 1991 by Lemieux and Pilon. It was created for Hong Kong 2000.

Lemieux and Pilon have since collaborated on works including Grand Hôtel des Étrangers, the stage design and direction of the Prix Félix ceremony in 1995, theatrical adaptations of Jean Cocteau’s Orféo, William Shakespeare’s The Tempest and Luc Plamondon’s Starmania, and Cirque du Soleil’s 2006 show Delirium.

Lemieux was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2012, and a Chévalier of the National Order of Quebec in 2014.

He premiered Mutations in 1988 at Calgary’s 1988 Winter Olympics arts festival. In addition, Taming the Power Within was released. Mutations was a tour he did in Canada and at World Expo 88, Australia. Taming the Power Within was nominated for Best English Pop/Rock Album by Felix.

Lemieux, a 1979 graduate of Canada’s National Theatre School, composed music for dance and theatre troupes such as La La La Human Steps. He also did performance art in Montreal before achieving greater success with Solide Salade, his 1984 production. This complex performance piece, which combined film and video projections with music and dance, was sold out in Montreal. It then toured to other cities across North America, Europe, and Japan.
