Dantin was a protégé of Michel Barnier (future French agriculture minister) who served as European Commission for Internal Market and Services from 2010 to 2014. He was a member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development throughout his time in parliament. He was also a member, from 2010 to 2011, of the Special Committee for the policy challenges and budgetary resource for a sustainable European Union. He was also a member, from 2014 to 2019, of the parliament’s delegation to Norway and Switzerland.
In the Republicans’ 2017 leadership election, Dantin endorsed Laurent Wauquiez.
Dantin was sixth on the Union for a Popular Movement in the South-East, and he was not elected to the European Parliament. Despite being the fifth UMP MEP candidate, Nora Berra was appointed to the government and she did not get a seat. Dantin took her place. He was re-elected in the 2014 European elections.

Dantin, then 23, was elected a Chambery municipal councillor under Pierre Dumas, a Gaullist mayor. He was the youngest member of the General Council of Savoie for the Rally for the Republic in 1985. Under the Presidency of Michel Barnier (1994-1998), he was Vice President of General Council. He was defeated in 1998 by Thierry Repentin, a Socialist candidate when he sought a third term as a cantonal representative. He was reelected as a municipal councillor on RPR or UMP lists in 1989 1995, 2001, and 2008.
Between 2002 and 2007, Dantin was in the ministerial cabinets Herve Gaymard, Dominique Bussereau, and since 2007 in Michel Barnier’s cabinet.
Within the European People’s Party, Dantin served as co-chair of the Ad Hoc Group on Agriculture from 2016 until 2017, alongside Germany’s Minister of Food and Agriculture Christian Schmidt.
