His works have been featured on everything from television shows to audiobooks, and he has won two Emmy Awards. His projects include the Cargo 2011 human trafficking film and short Disney films. His recent solo piano album, “All The Things That I Could Not Say”, was released in 2013. He is also a producer and recording artist. He performs regularly in NYC as an adjunct professor at The City College of New York and The Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, Tisch School of the Arts. Warner/Chappell Music represents Whalen.
Whalen worked for many top music companies and produced hundreds of commercials between 1989 and 1995. Michael was the first to score his major television series, “Childhood”, which aired on PBS in America in 1990. He composed the music for this series, which was just one of more than 70 that he had worked on. It also marked the beginning of his nearly 600 television series. Whalen started Michael Whalen Music LTD in 1995. He also created music for dozens of television shows, including National Geographic, Discovery Channel, ESPN, PBS, and ESPN. He won his first Emmy Award in 1997 for his work on HBO’s series “How Do You Spell God?” Whalen was the original theme writer for ABC News’ Good Morning America in 1998. He moved to Boston’s suburbs in 1998 and built a studio in his attic.
In 2009, Whalen released his first EP featuring him as a vocalist, titled “The Road of Ghosts.”
In 2017, Whalen produced “Tiny Hands”, a protest song written for the Inauguration of Donald Trump and the Women’s March on Washington and performed by Fiona Apple.
Whalen moved to New York City in May 1987 after attending the Berklee College of Music, Boston (1984 – 1985), and the University of Maryland/College Park (1985-1987). Whalen eventually moved to New York City after recording hundreds of tracks in the 8-track basement studio.

Michael began his career at Elias Associates, later known as Elias Arts. He was an assistant. Elias was one the most active music production companies in the 1990s and 1980s. Whalen spent his nights immersed in the state of the art technology in Elias’ studios. The Synclavier Digital Sound System was a key part of Whalen’s later career. Whalen’s first sound design and composition of national ads (Pepsi and Coca-Cola as well as IBM, Ford, Nutrasweet, IBM and Ford) was done at Elias. As an assistant, programmer, and sound designer, he also worked with John Waite, Duran Duran and Glamour camp, recording artists.
Whalen began playing piano at age three and started drum lessons when he was five. He was influenced by progressive music, rock, fusion and early “ambient” music. He experimented with many styles of music throughout his teens. Whalen was a percussionist with Maryland’s all-state orchestra. He also played second keyboards in Washington’s “Go-Go”, and played drums in a punk-style garage band. He attended St. Andrew’s School, Middletown, Delaware, boarding school in the fall 1980. Whalen made his first music in high school. He switched from percussion to keyboards and made his first studio recordings. He produced and released his first single with guitarist Jim Steed, singer/songwriter.
In 2002, Whalen was an associate professor at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He completed work on the soundtrack for the film Veronika Decides to Die starring Sarah Michelle Gellar in 2008. The piano solo “My Linda,” from his album Dancing In Black & White, provided the introductory music for all 12 volumes of Anthony Powell’s A Dance to the Music of Time as recorded by Simon Vance for Audible Modern Vanguard.
