Michael Sanderling was born in Berlin to Barbara Wagner, the contrabassist, and Kurt Sanderling, the conductor. At five years old, he took his first lessons in cello in Berlin. He was eleven years old when he began studying with Matthias Pfaender, Spezialschule fur Musik Berlin. Sanderling, 17, was accepted to the Hochschule fur Musik Hanns Eisler and studied with Josef Schwab. He continued his lessons with Yo-Yo Ma and Gary Hoffmann, as well as Lynn Harrell. He won the 1st prize in 1987 at the Maria Canals International Music Competition. He was also engaged to be the solo cellist for the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in 1987, his first solo performance. This position he held until 1992. He was the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra’s guest solo cellist from 1994 to 2006. He was an academic at Hochschule fur Musik Hanns Eisler from 1994 to 1998. He began teaching at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts in 1998. He was also Hochschule der Kunste Bern’s professor between 2000 and 2003. From 1988 to 1996, he was a member the Trio Ex Aequo. Sanderling ceased his solo cello career in 2010 to concentrate on conducting and teaching.
Sanderling was first a conductor for the Kammerorchester Berlin in November 2000. In 2003, he became principal conductor of the Deutsche Streicherphilharmonie, and held the post through 2013. Sanderling served as principal conductor and artistic chief of the Kammerakademie Potsdam from 2006 to 2010. Sony released in 2009 a CD featuring works by Dmitri Stostakovich and Sanderling.
