Proctor signed a loan for a month to League Two club Wrexham in March 2007. The loan was extended to the end of the 2006/07 season in April. He scored two crucial goals during this period for Wrexham’s eventual survival bid. These were the winning goal against local rivals Shrewsbury Town, and the third goal against Boston United in the 3-1 win that the Welsh club won. This resulted in Wrexham’s Football League status being preserved. Hartlepool released him in May 2007. He expressed interest in Wrexham permanent membership. In May 2007, Hartlepool confirmed this move. In May 2007, Wrexham transferred Proctor to their team. This was in response to the club’s relegation from the Football Conference. Swindon couldn’t afford to extend his loan at club so he returned to Rotherham for March. In July 2005, he transferred free to Hartlepool United. Hartlepool fans are most fondly aware of his two goals in a 3-1 win over Darlington in a League Cup tie in the early years of his Pools career. Before Danny Wilson released him, he played 32 games for Hartlepool and scored ten goals.

Proctor was born in Sunderland and Tyne and Wear. He began his professional career in the Sunderland youth system and signed a professional deal with them on 29 Oct 1997. Proctor made his debut in Sunderland’s League Cup against Everton on 11/11 1998. It ended in a 1-1 draw. In 2000, he was loaned out to Danish side Hvidovre to recover from a cruciate injury. In March 2001, he joined Halifax Town on a loan. He made his debut against Cheltenham Town in a 4-2 victory. In 12 games, he scored four goals during his loan spell. He was on loan at York City during 2001-02 season and made his debut against Rushden & Diamonds. He ended this season with 49 appearances, 14 goals and was York’s highest scorer. In August 2002, he was loaned to Bradford City. He was a fan favorite, as he scored the winning goal in Bradford’s 2-1 win over Ipswich Town. He scored four goals in 12 games over his two-month stint, including a late equaliser against Burnley. However, he returned to Sunderland after Howard Wilkinson denied him another month of extension.

This isn’t an area of work Michael had intentionally planned on getting into after retiring, as he had previously been involved in coaching at East Durham College. Since becoming a frequent visitor to the Stadium of Light to undergo his media duties, Michael has begun to work closer with the Sunderland media team, most notably interviewing Jermain Defoe about his winning goal in a game against fierce rivals Newcastle United.
