He won the Australian lightweight pair title in 2004 at the Australian Rowing Championships, Toowong Rowing Club colours. He won the 2007 national lightweight pair title in racing for the QUBC, rowing with Todd Skipworth.

He came back into representative contention in 2010 vying for a seat in either the Australian lightweight eight or the coxless four. He raced in a lightweight four at two World Rowing Cups that year but didn’t make selection to either boat for the 2010 World Championships. He had rowed his last regatta as an Australian representative.

McBryde changed to sweep-oared boats in 2004. McBryde was selected to compete in the 2004 World Rowing Championships as a lightweight coxless tandem with Tim O’Callaghan. They finished fourth in their class. He was in the lightweight coxless four in 2005 for their campaign at 2005 World Rowing Championships, Gifu, Japan. They finished fourth. He remained in the Australian lightweight coxless four all through 2006, and he rowed at two European World Rowing Cups before he competed in the 2006 World Championships at Eton Dorney. They finished sixth.

McBryde represented Queensland for the first time in 2001, when he won the Penrith Cup at the Interstate Regatta. McBryde raced in additional President’s Cup lightweight quads for Queensland in 2002 and 2003, 2004, 2006, and 2010. He was also selected for the Queensland men’s eights to compete in the King’s Cup at Interstate Regatta 2010.

In 2007 McBryde moved into the Australian lightweight coxless pair with West Australian Ross Brown. They rowed at a World Cup in Lucerne and then at the 2007 World Rowing Championships in Munich, they took the bronze medal.
