Michael John LaChiusa is one of the most popular and richest Composer who was born on July 24, 1962 in Chautauqua, New York, United States. Michael John LaChiusa, born July 24, 1962, is an American composer of musical theatre and opera, lyricist, as well as a librettist. His musically complex shows include Hello Again, Marie Christine and The Wild Party. In 2000, he was nominated for four Tony Awards for his book and score for Marie Christine and The Wild Party. He also received another nomination for his libretto for Chronicle of a Death Foretold in 1996.

Little Fish, a one-act musical that LaChiusa found uncharacteristically cheery, was premiered Off-Broadway in 2003. It was based on two stories by Deborah Eisenberg. LaChiusa was devastated by the show’s failure and he said, “My God, they don’t want the difficult stuff or more challenging material here in that city from me. They also don’t want anything nice and entertaining. “What am I supposed do?”

In October 2005, LaChiusa’s musical See What I Wanna See, based on the stories “In a Grove,” “The Dragon,” and “Kesa and Morito” by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, opened Off-Broadway at the Public Theater and closed on December 4, 2005. LaChiusa was nominated for Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Music and Outstanding Lyrics.

In August 2005, LaChiusa published an article in Opera News that disparaged several successful, upbeat Broadway musicals of the 2000s, among them The Producers and Hairspray, which LaChiusa dubbed a “faux-musical”. He continued, “Instead of choreography, there is dancing. Instead of crafted songwriting, there is tune-positioning. Faux-musicals are mechanical; they have to be. For expectations to be met, there can be no room for risk, derring-do or innovation.” The article caused a great deal of controversy and provoked shocked responses from several of LaChiusa’s colleagues, who saw it as an attack.

Two of LaChiusa’s large-scale musicals were premiered on Broadway during the 1999-2000 season: Marie Christine, and The Wild Party. Marie Christine, a retelling the Medea myth set 19th-century Louisiana, stars Audra McDonald. It attracted controversy because of its dark subject matter and demanding score. The New York Times reported that even the classically trained and formidable McDonald’s could only sing it six times per week rather than the usual eight. Marie Christine was closed after 42 performances. LaChiusa stated that the show should have been performed for only three performances …. It’s enormous and extremely difficult. The Wild Party was inspired by the 1928 poem of that name by Joseph Moncure March. It starred Toni Collette and Mandy Patinkin and Eartha Kitt. The Wild Party was a failure commercially. It received seven Tony nominations, but failed to win one. Producers closed the show. LaChiusa was nominated for Best Book of a Musical as well as Best Original Score.
