Hoganson joined Newcastle United 2008, and he played primarily for the under-18-side. He also featured occasionally in Peter Beardsley’s reserve squads but was never a member of the first team until he was released in 2012.

Nigel Clough stated that Hoganson would play primarily for the under-21 team in the new Professional Development League 2 North but would also cover left back and midfield in the first side. Hoganson was an 87-minute substitute for Conor Sammon and made his competitive debut with the first team in a 3-1 victory against Middlesbrough. Hoganson made his debut in a 0-0 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers, covering for Gareth Roberts who was suspended. After three consecutive starts, Hoganson was forced to leave the team by Craig Forsyth and Roberts, and he returned to the under-21 side. Hoganson continued to play in that position throughout the season, and was offered a one-year contract in May.
