Gianaris was credited with helping to dismantle the Independent Democratic Conference in 2018 and creating a plan for Democrats to win the majority in the state Senate. This was a successful move. Gianaris was appointed Deputy Majority leader after their rise to the majority.
In 2010, Senator George Onorato chose not to run for re-election and Gianaris was elected to his place. Gianaris won easily in a heavily Democratic district and has never been re-elected.
