Michael Brynntrup Biography

Michael Brynntrup is one of the most popular and richest Filmmaker who was born on February 7, 1959 in Münster, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Michael Bryntrup, a German experimental filmmaker and media art artist who was born in 1959, is currently residing in Berlin. His most well- known works include experimental films and video installations. However, electrography, digital art, and internet art are also among his best-known. He has been Professor of Film/Video at Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste Braunschweig since 2006.

The Ivory Elephant was born at the end of the 1980s. It featured eight death dances or danses macrobres. Each episode featured a different performance artist interacting with a skull. The film cycle ended in 1993 with a 16 mm film called SUDDEN AND UNEXPECTED – A Deja-Revue. The impact of the AIDS epidemic was evident in this film cycle. Other early films also included death dances. In the 1990s, Bryntrup began to pay more attention the topic of homosexuality. Many prizes were won by films such as Aide Memoire, Loverfilm, and short and experimental film festivals around the globe. Special Jury Prize for German Film Critics at 1996 Oberhausen Short Film Festival and Award for Best Experimental Works at 1998 Images Festival in Toronto.

Starting in 2001, Brynntrup began undertaking annual trips to Far East Asia, during which he worked on the thematic series Gelbfieber (“Yellow Fever”). This resulted in numerous video installations and photographs, which were summarized in a 2011/12 site-specific installation entitled GELBFIEBER [Inkubation] (“YELLOW FEVER [Incubation]”). “He thus ingeniously challenges us to look slowly and carefully in his work for what is explicitly not there. Michael Brynntrup has fortunately not altered his signature touch, that is to say, his singular provocation of the viewer.”

Those who have learned to die no longer know to serve.” Freedom and its limits are a constant theme of Brynntrup’s works, in terms of both content and form. In his films, he deals with transgressions, extremes and taboos; as an experimental filmmaker, he explores (among other things) society’s media reality (such as in the film E.C.G. Expositus, 2003), and strives to develop a filmic language that goes far beyond technical limits, commonly accepted ways of seeing and cinematic conventions.

More than 15 of his films have been premiered at Berlin International Film Festivals in different sections (Panorama and Forum of New Cinema, Forum Expanded) since 1983. In New York, the Museum of Modern Art dedicated several film exhibitions to him in 1992, 1999, and 1993. Numerous experimental and short film festivals have featured retrospectives of his work (e.g. 1988 Hamburg International Short Film Festival, 2004 Tampere Film Festival

Brynntrup started filming his first film, SEPTEMBER RAGE, A Journey in 1981/82, after a lengthy visit to Italy (1981/82).
