Michael Bettaney Biography

Michael Bettaney is one of the most popular and richest Double Agent who was born on February 13, 1950 in Fenton, England, United Kingdom. Michael John Bettaney, also known as Michael Malkin (13 February 1950-16 August 2018), was a British intelligence officer. He worked in the Counter- Espionage Branch of the Security Service commonly known as MI5. After passing sensitive documents to London’s Soviet Embassy and trying to act as an agent in-place for the Soviet Union, he was convicted by the Old Bailey in 1984.

An alternative view has been offered to the above. It is that “[Bettaney] sent a sufficiently cryptic message to the Soviet embassy’s KGB personnel. They had to contact him using the standard spycraft techniques of pins on escalators and numbered steps.

Bettaney was born in Fenton, Stoke on Trent. He later attended Pembroke College in Oxford and graduated from the University. Bettaney is reputed to have been known for his admiration of Adolf Hitler as well as for singing the “Horst-Wessel-Lied” in local public places. Soon after graduating from Oxford, Bettaney joined Security Service in 1975.

Bettaney knew the address through his work and dropped the documentation through Guk’s letterbox. Bettaney didn’t know that KGB [Acting] Colonel Oleg Gordievsky was also a member of the Station. Gordievsky informed MI6 about Bettaney and British authorities were able to arrest him. Bettaney had been planning to fly to Vienna to hand over more secrets to Soviets when he was arrested at his house in September 1983.
