Michael Anthony Pegues, born May 11, 1962, is an African American visual artist based in New York City. He was born and raised in Brooklyn by his mother from Liberia and his father from Portugal. He attended alternative High School Redirection in Brownsville, Brooklyn and then Nassau Community College in Garden City, LI. He is a self-taught modern-day Fauve, expressionist and Pop artist. He is contemporaneous with Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol. His work heavily influences Hip Hop music and Graffiti. Pegues’ first solo and retrospective show in New York at the FB Gallery was “Prince Michael’s Neverland” (May 16 – June 3). His first solo exhibition abroad was in Italy in 2014. It took place at Le 4 Pareti, galleria d’arte in Napoli from April 5-17. His acrylic canvases, sculptures, and assemblages were also exhibited at the New York Public Library, Soho, Jonathan Shorr Gallery and Soho’s Aurora Gallery.
