Michael John Keane, a Canadian ex-professional ice hockey winger, was born May 29, 1967. Keane, who was not drafted, played more than 1,100 games in National Hockey League between 1988 and 2004. From 1988 to 2004, Keane was undrafted and played in over 1,100 games for the National Hockey League. He retired in 2010 after playing five seasons with his hometown Manitoba Moose, American Hockey League. Keane has been a Stanley Cup champion three times, winning with the Montreal Canadiens, Colorado Avalanche, and Dallas Stars. Keane is one of 11 NHL players to have won the cup with more than one team. The Winnipeg Jets hired Keane to be Assistant of Player Development on September 3, 2013.
Keane signed with the Manitoba Moose for the 2005-06 AHL Season after the lockout of 2004-05. Keane was a five-year player for the Manitoba Moose. In 2005, he was elected captain and served as Manitoba’s captain until his contract was terminated on July 20, 2010. Keane was also captain for the AHL All-Star Team Canada 2007. Keane’s number twelve jersey was taken off February 12, 2011, as the Manitoba Moose faced the San Antonio Rampage at Bell MTS Place. Keane’s number was the last number to be retired in Manitoba Moose History.
Keane and Patrick Roy were traded to the Colorado Avalanche during the 1995-96 NHL season in exchange for Jocelyn Thibault (and Andrei Kovalenko) and Martin Rucinsky. In the finals, he helped the Avalanche beat the Florida Panthers to win his second Stanley Cup. Keane was a second season with the Avalanche before becoming a free agent during 1997. After signing with the New York Rangers where he played half a season, the Rangers traded Keane and Brian Skrudland and their 1998 6th round draft pick (Pavel Patera), to the Dallas Stars for Todd Harvey and Bob Errey and their 1998 4th round draft selection (Boyd Kane). Keane was a Dallas player from 2000-01. He helped the Stars win the Stanley Cup 1999 and returned to the finals in the following year. Keane played in the 2001-02 NHL seasons with the St. Louis Blues, but he ended that season back with Colorado. Keane was a Colorado resident until he moved to Vancouver for the 2003-04 NHL season.

Keane started his junior hockey career with the Winnipeg South Blues in the Junior A Manitoba Junior Hockey League. Keane then joined the Western Hockey League’s major junior ranks with the Moose Jaw Warriors. Keane was not drafted as a junior and signed as a free agent with the Montreal Canadiens on September 25, 1985. He began his NHL career in 1988. In 1993, Keane was a fifth NHL season’s captain and helped the Canadiens win the Stanley Cup. From April 1995 to December 1995, he was the captain of the team for eight seasons. Keane was appointed the 24th Montreal Canadiens captain after Kirk Muller was sold near the end 1994-95 season. After speaking with Mathias Brunet, a French newspaper, Keane was under scrutiny by the media. Keane stated that he did not intend to learn French. After claiming that he didn’t believe it was necessary for him to learn French, Keane caused controversy in France. Players on the team spoke mainly English.
Keane represented Team Canada at the 1987 World Junior Championships, Czechoslovakia. Both teams were competing for the gold medal against Soviet Union but were disqualified by the notorious Punch-up in Piestany.
