Michael A. Burstein was a New York City native, who grew up in Forest Hills, Queens. He was educated at Hunter College High School in Manhattan, and then he attended Harvard College. There he was a member the Harvard-Radcliffe Science Fiction Association. In 1991, he graduated Harvard with a Physics degree. In 1993, he received a Master’s degree in Physics from Boston University. Burstein was a Clarion Workshop participant in 1994. Burstein studied comic book writing with Dennis O’Neil in Manhattan’s School of Visual Arts.
Burstein’s first published story “TeleAbsence”, published in Analog’s July 1995 issue, was nominated by Hugo Award. It was also chosen by Analog readers as the best short story in 1995. Burstein was awarded the John W. Campbell Award as Best New Writer at 1997 World Science Fiction Convention LoneStarCon2 two years later.
Burstein’s short story collection I Remember the Future: The Award-Nominated Stories of Michael A. Burstein was released by Apex Publications on November 1, 2008. On February 19, 2010, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America announced that the title story from the collection had been nominated for the 2009 Nebula Award for Best Short Story.
