Downs was a former Kansas Jayhawks small forward. He later transferred to Gonzaga University and graduated. Downs was a member the West Coast Conference All-Tournament Team (WCC) in 2007 and 2009. In 2009, he was also the WCC All- Tournament MVP.
Downs was undrafted in 2009’s NBA Draft. He participated in 2009 Las Vegas NBA Summer League, as a Phoenix Suns member. Downs’ first year as a professional in Croatia, he played for KK Zadar and averaged 7.6 points per contest (ppg) during the NLB League. He also averaged 11.0 ppg while playing in the Eurocup. Downs shot over half of his field goals. After his move to the Leuven Bears, Downs averaged 12.4 point, 3.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists per match.
On November 1, 2012, Downs signed with the Maine Red Claws of the NBA D-League. On February 4, 2013, Downs was named to the Futures All-Star roster for the 2013 NBA D-League All-Star Game. He left the Red Claws in April 2013.
