Mervyn Day is one of the most popular and richest Association Football Player who was born on June 26, 1955 in Chelmsford, England, United Kingdom. Mervyn Richard Day, born 26 June 1955, is an English former professional footballer. He was a goalkeeper in the Football League for West Ham United (Leyton Orient), Aston Villa, Leeds United (Leeds United), Luton Town (Sheffield United) and Carlisle United. Later, he managed Carlisle United. He was the former chief scout of Leeds United.
Eddie Gray, then Leeds United manager, signed him in 1985. He proved to be a great buy and was a key player in Billy Bremner’s 1987 run to the FA Cup semifinal and League play offs. Howard Wilkinson kept Day as his first choice goalkeeper, and he won a Division 2 winner medal when promotion was finally achieved. Day was demoted to the reserve and bench after John Lukic’s resignation. He remained loyal to Elland Road for three more seasons, until he left Elland Road in 1993, eight years after his first club. Carlisle United was his final club.
He was first team coach to Alan Curbishley at Charlton Athletic for many years before he and Curbishley both left the club at the end of the 2005–06 season. On 13 December 2006, he was again named as Curbishley’s number two after the former was unveiled as the new West Ham manager but left the club at the same time as Curbishley in September 2008. On 20 July 2010 he rejoined Leeds United as chief scout to work alongside technical director Gwyn Williams. He left the position as chief scout at Leeds in March 2012 and worked as a co-commentator on ESPN’s coverage of the Bundesliga. In November 2012 Day was appointed Scouting and Talent Identification Manager at Brighton and Hove Albion. On 2 July 2014 was appointed head of recruitment at West Bromwich Albion. On 30 June 2015 Day left his post as head of recruitment at West Bromwich Albion after a year in the job. Day is now International Scout at Bristol City Football Club.
He moved to Leyton Orient in July 1979 for PS100,000. John Jackson was his replacement.

He represented Essex Schools at every level and was selected six times for the England Schools squad, although he didn’t play. Day was 15 years old when he was sent by West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Ipswich Town to be scouted. Ron Greenwood’s West Ham United signed Day to a youth contract in July 1971.
He signed a contract with West Ham in February 1973 and made his debut against Ipswich Town on 29 August 1973. Day was soon the team’s first goalkeeper. He was 19 years old when he became the youngest ever FA Cup Finalist. In the same season, he was awarded the PFA Young Player Award. He is the only goalkeeper to win this award. He was considered the next great England goalkeeper. He was a fixture in 1976’s Cup Winners Cup Final, where West Ham lost to Anderlecht 4-2 at the Heysel Stadium. Day was unable to play due to injuries and a loss in form. However, Phil Parkes’ performances were strong enough that Day was able to continue playing when he recovered from his injury.
After retiring, he was manager of Carlisle United and lead them to promotion into Division Two & a Football League Trophy win in 1997, but left shortly after due to a falling out with the chairman, Michael Knighton, who replaced Day as manager.
