Baroness Hussein -Ece was born at Islington. Ayshe Cuma Abullah (mother), and Hasan Nihat Hussein, her Turkish Cypriot father, arrived in the UK in the 1950s from Cyprus. They settled in Islington in North London. Abdullah, Ece’s second cousin, was reportedly a Sudanese slain in the Ottoman Empire.
She was elected Liberal Democrat councillor in Mildmay ward of Islington Council during the 2002 local government elections. From 2002 to 2006 she was Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care. She served as Chair of Islington Health Partnership Board and a member on Islington Primary Care Trust Board. Camden and Islington Mental Health and Social Care Trust also had her as a non-executive director. Ece, who was re-elected in 2006 and 2007 respectively, was the Chair of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee between 2007 and 2009. Ece was elected as the Commissioner to Equality and Human Rights Commission in November 2009. Harriet Harman MP, Minister for Equalities, appointed Ece to the Task Force of the Government to increase the number of UK ethnic minority women councillors.
It was announced by the UK Cabinet Office on Friday 28 May 2010 that Meral Hussein Ece was to be appointed to the House of Lords. She was created a life peer on 25 June 2010 taking the title Baroness Hussein-Ece, of Highbury in the London Borough of Islington. She made her maiden speech at the House of Lords on 15 July 2010 in a debate on criminal justice. In November 2012, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate (DLitt) by Coventry University, for her work to promote equality for ethnic minorities in the UK, and contribution to peace in Cyprus.
In May 2011 Hussein-Ece was forced to apologised after she referred to customers in her local supermarket as “chavs”. She claimed the word was not derogatory, but writers such as Polly Toynbee criticised her, arguing that the term was “acceptable class abuse by people asserting superiority over those they despise”.
After a split within Hackney Labour, Ece joined the Liberal Democrats in 1997. She was reelected to Hackney Borough Council in Dalston Ward in 1998. She was instrumental in establishing the first Turkish Women’s Group and a domestic violence program for Kurdish and Turkish women.

Meral Hussein Ece (Baroness Hussein Ece, OBE, was born 10 October 1955 and is a British Liberal Democrat member of House of Lords. After being appointed a Liberal Democrat worker peer on 28 mai 2010, she is the first woman from Turkish Cypriot descent to become a member of either House of Parliament. From 2015 to 2016, she was the Liberal Democrat Spokeswoman on Equalities under leader Tim Farron.
In 1994, she was elected to Hackney Council as a Labour Party Councillor for Clissold Ward. She also served as Deputy Leader 1995 and 1996. She was the first woman of Turkish/Cypriot origin to be elected to public office in Britain.
Ece was awarded the OBE in the Queens New Year Honours 2009, for services to local government. She was Chair of the Ethnic Minority Liberal Democrats (2007–10) and was a member of the Liberal Democrats Federal Executive Committee 2005–10, and advised Nick Clegg MP, Leader of the Liberal Democrats on community cohesion and minority ethnic communities.
