She was re-elected to her third term on the Council in November 2013. Her close ally Bill de Blasio won her election as mayor. The New York Daily News quickly referred to Mark-Viverito, naming her the “front-runner” for the second-most powerful post in New York City politics — Speaker of City Council. Social media, flyers, and phone banking were all part of a grassroots campaign to support her Speaker candidacy.
Mark-Viverito was elected City Council Speaker on January 8, 2014, at age 44, becoming the first member of the Council’s Black, Latino and Asian Caucus to hold this position. Her first “State of the City” speech emphasized reform of the criminal justice system.
Described by The New York Times as “fiercely liberal”, she was elected Speaker on January 8, 2014, succeeding Christine Quinn.
Mark-Viverito was elected in 2005 after Reed’s term expired. Mark-Viverito introduced and passed numerous pieces of legislation during her four-year tenure. These included legislation on tenant harassment, building safety and greening buildings. She criticized Kirsten Gillibrand’s voting record on immigration in January 2009.
