On 26 August 2000, he made his first-team debut in a goalless draw against Watford. John Hartson, then 17, set up a chance and John Hartson was able to head against the goalkeeper. After he broke his ankle in an under-19 match, he played three more games for the first team. After playing twice more for the first team in the 2000-01 Football League season he had to have surgery on his knee cartilage. He was then unable to play in the first two months 2001-02 seasons due to the injury. In November 2001, he played in a qualifier for the European Championship against Georgian under-19s. This was an impressive feat. Morgan won the match 4-1. Nigel Spackman, Sky Sports’ man of match, named him.
At the end of January 2002, he was substituted and returned to first-team action. Morgan was offered a PS750,000 by Tottenham Hotspur in February. Although Terry Burton, the manager, was reluctant to sell the club’s assets, the club’s losses of around PS20,000 per day prompted Charles Koppel, the chairman to reconsider the offer. Koppel insisted that Morgan would not leave the club “at the right cost” and the player said he was happy there. Morgan also scored in an international friendly against Germany for England’s under- 19s. There was speculation that Wimbledon wouldn’t make it to the play-offs without Morgan in their starting eleven. His first senior goal was in March, against Rotherham United. It came from a free kick that Stuart Murdoch described as “Beckham-esque”. He suffered a severe injury to his cruciate ligament in the match against Crewe Alexandra. This required two operations, and kept him from first-team action for seven more months.
After scoring in his first league start of the season, he received a call-up to represent England under-20s, and played the whole of a 2–0 defeat to Switzerland. In his third game back in first-team action after a knee cartilage operation in January 2003, he was forced out of the game with a bruised and lacerated ankle resulting from a foul tackle by Portsmouth’s Tim Sherwood; manager Murdoch accused the player of singling Morgan out for rough treatment. In April he underwent further surgery on his knee cartilage.
