Melissa was born in Garland, Texas, to Kelly Henderson and Kathy Henderson. She attended Berkner High School in Richardson and received many honors and awards. Henderson was a varsity soccer player for three seasons. She set school records with 66 goals, and was second in assists with 45 (overall, 177 points) in 47 career matches. Due to commitments with the national team, Henderson didn’t play her senior season. After her sophomore and junior seasons, Henderson was named Parade All-American. She was also a two-time all- district performer at Berkner, where she was also district MVP, all-area, NSCAA/Adidas youth player of the year, and was the first ever junior women’s soccer player to be named Gatorade High School Player (2006-07 season). Only six other juniors from any sport have ever been awarded the Gatorade national honor. She was an active member of the National Honor Society for three years, a senior class secretary of student council, and helped coach younger soccer players.

Henderson was a University of Notre Dame student who majored Psychology. She was a star player for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. She was nominated for an ESPY Award in her junior year. This was her second nomination, after being nominated once during high school. She was ranked in the top 10 school graduates in eight categories: goals, goals per match, goals per match, points (ninth, 166), points per match, points per match, match-winning points, match- winning points, first goals, second goals, and hat tricks (tied at first, six). In school history, she was among 27 players with at least 20 goals or 20 assists. She also set single-season school records for match-winning goals (99) and first goals (10) in 2009. She set the school’s single season record for hat trick at three in 2011, and tied it with four in 2009. This was in a win over Central Michigan, and also during Senior Night against DePaul in 2011. She is one of only two school-record holders with at least two four-goal matches during her career. Henderson was one the four Fighting Irish players who had multiple eight-point matches during their careers. She was also the only player to score three goals in a match’s first half. She was a junior and won the Honda Sports Award for the best soccer player in the country.

Henderson signed on as a free agent with FC Kansas City prior to the start of the inaugural 2013 season with the National Women’s Soccer League.
