Mel Tomlinson is one of the most popular and richest Ballet Dancer who was born on January 3, 1954 in Raleigh, North Carolina, United States. Mel Alexander Tomlinson, born January 3, 1954 and died February 5, 2019, was an American choreographer and dancer. He was the sole African-American dancer at the New York City Ballet when he made his debut in 1981. Agnes de Mille, a ballet choreographer, referred to Tomlinson “a most exciting black dancer” in America.

Tomlinson was openly homosexual. In the 1990s, he was diagnosed with HIV and became ill with AIDS. Tomlinson was accepted into the House of Mercy on December 8, 1998. This ministry of the Catholic Sisters of Mercy is Belmont, North Carolina. It assists those in the last stages of AIDS. Shirley Stowe, House of Mercy’s director of nursing, had hoped that Tomlinson would die within six months of being admitted. He was eventually released from the House of Mercy on September 10, 2000 after a slow recovery.

Tomlinson was awarded the North Carolina Prize in 1983 for his outstanding contribution to the visual and performing arts. After achieving the rank of soloist in New York City Ballet’s ballet, Tomlinson left the company and returned to North Carolina to become a faculty member at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Salvatore Aiello directed him as a principal dancer at the North Carolina Dance Theatre. He left North Carolina Dance Theatre in 1991 and joined Boston Ballet as a principal and master dancer in the CITYDANCE program. He continued dancing with the company until 1994. Tomlinson was also a teacher at Boston Conservatory of Music and Harvard University, as well as at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He also taught at the School at Greensboro Ballet and Charlotte Ballet.

Tomlinson was raised in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was born in Raleigh and grew up in Southeast Raleigh’s Chavis Heights neighborhood. As a Fred J. Carnage Junior High school student, he began to dance and took lessons from Betty Kovach. He attended the segregated John W. Ligon Senior School in the 1960s, where he learned dance and gymnastics. He earned a B.F.A. He studied dance at the North Carolina School of the Arts.

Tomlinson started his professional dance career in 1974 as a principal dancer at Agnes de Mille Heritage Dance Theater. It was established at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Tomlinson, who was also invited by Joffrey Ballet to join Dance Theatre of Harlem in 1974, moved to New York City. He was made a soloist by Dance Theatre of Harlem and performed in Manifestations, Swan Lake, Scheherazade, and other productions. Later, he left Dance Theatre of Harlem and joined Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. He danced in Pas de Duke as well as The Time Before the Time After. Tomlinson was the first African- American dancer to join the New York City Ballet in 1981. On November 27, 1981, he made his debut at New York City Ballet in George Balanchine’s Agon with Heather Watts.

Tomlinson later lived in Charlotte, North Carolina and was a dance teacher and director of The Hallelujah Dance Corps at St. Paul Baptist Church. He died on February 5, 2019 at the age of 65.
