Purcell graduated Murray High School, and then went on to Memphis State University (now The University of Memphis) where he played for a year. In 1980, Purcell transferred to the University of Tennessee where he won the NCAA doubles championship along with Rodney Harmon.

Purcell was a participant in the US Open 10 times (1978-1987), where he won victories over Stan Smith and Andres Gomez, as well as Ilie Nastase. He was also part of a rare match in which the eventual loser won two sets 6-0. He lost to Jose Luis Clerc in his third round 6-3, 0-6,, 0-6, and 6-4. This was during the 1981 US Open. Six times he competed in the French Open (1981-84, 1987-1988), where he reached the round 16 in singles twice and reached the quarterfinals in doubles with Vincent Van Patten in 1981.
Purcell made his professional debut in 1980. He was a wildcard entrant to the Washington (D.C.), Star Tournament and defeated top-ranked Eddie Dibbs. He qualified for the U.S. Clay Courts two weeks later. There he defeated Hank Pfister, top-10 ranked Harold Solomon, before losing in the finals against Jose Luis Clerc. Purcell’s Association of Tennis Professionals ranking soared from the 300s up to the top 40. He was crowned 1980 ATP rookie of the year.
The next year he played at Wimbledon, the first of six appearances (1981–85, 1987). He reached the quarterfinals in 1983, beating Tim Wilkison, Stuart Bale, Andreas Maurer and Brian Gottfried before falling to eventual runner-up New Zealand’s Chris Lewis in a four-set quarterfinal.
