Mehmed Uzun, a Kurdish-Turkish literature specialist, was repeatedly charged in Turkey. On March 21, 1976, he was arrested as the managing editor of a Kurdish–Turkish magazine. He was charged with “separatism” in Ankara’s central jail. He tried to prove the existence and Kurdish language during his 1976 trial. According to the prosecutor, the Kurds and their language were not in existence. Anyone claiming otherwise was considered a separatist. He was sentenced for eight months. He was still at risk of being indicted for his responsibilities as editor of this magazine. After being released, he fled to Sweden in 1977. He was unable to return to Turkey because of the Turkish regulations at that time.
In 1981, the military regime decided to strip him of his nationality. With the help of grants from Sweden, he resumed his linguistic search in Stockholm. He visited an Iraqi Kurdish leader, spent evenings in a tent, and listened to Kurdish storytellers and poets, while trying to collect vocabulary. To read the classic Kurdish poetry of the 16th and 17th century, he learned Arabic script. Later, he found rare copies of a 1920s Kurdish magazine. Two of his novels are based on the tragic adventures of these pioneers. They, like all his fiction, describe the struggles of Kurds throughout the ages. A group of intellectuals he headed paid for Kurds’ flights to Europe to teach them obscure vocabulary.
When after many years of living in exile, he went back to Turkey to give a speech about Kurdish literature, seven of his books, six in Kurdish and one in Turkish, were suppressed by Judgment no. 2000/39 of the Fourth Court for State Security of Diyarbakır, dated February 4, 2000.
