Mohamed Raouraoua (the president of the Algerian FA) announced on 12 December 2009 that Lacen would be selected for the Algerian team at the Africa Cup of Nations 2010 in Angola. Five days later, Rabah Saadane, the head coach, announced that Lacen would not be participating in the continental competition due to his wife’s pregnancies.
In June 2010, Lacen was selected to the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, playing all the games. During the tournament, he partnered Hassan Yebda (another defensive midfielder) as the national team failed to score a goal, earning one point.
On 12 February 2010, Racing Santander’s website announced that Lacen was chosen for Algeria’s upcoming friendly against Serbia. On 3 March he finally made his debut, in a 0–3 loss.
After winning two second divisions as the undisputed starter for Basques, Lacen was signed to Racing de Santander’s three-year contract on 15 August 2008. He competed all through the campaign for first-choice status alongside Peter Luccin (also newly signed).

Lacen was born in Paris, France to an Italian mother and an Algerian father. He began his professional career at ASOA Valence and Stade Lavallois. He moved to Spain for the 2005-06 season, joining Deportivo Alaves, which would eventually be relegated. His La Liga debut was made on 15 October 2005 in a 1-1 draw against Villarreal CF.
Although Lacen was French-born, he had the opportunity to represent Algeria through his fathers’ roots. Jean-Michel Cavalli called Lacen up to the national team in 2006 for a friendly against Gabon. However, an administrative problem prevented him from playing.
In 2009–10, as Racing finished in 16th position, Lacen became an automatic first-choice (Luccin returned to Real Zaragoza from his loan). He scored three goals, including in a 3–2 home win over Xerez CD on 13 December 2009.
