Addadi, while studying in the United States was named 2001 Most Valuable Swimmer at Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships and 2002 Most Outstanding Swimmer from the University of Maryland. Chad Cradock, Addadi’s head coach, also coached him on the University’s diving and swimming teams.

Addadi, Salim Iles, and Addadi were the only two Algerians to compete in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. His entry times of 56.30 (100m butterfly) and 58.28 (10m backstroke) were officially accredited by FINA under the B-standard. Addadi was 46th in the 100m backstroke on the second day. In heat two, Addadi finished sixth in 58.74. This was just 1.62-seconds behind the winning time of Sung Min from South Korea. Five days later, Addadi faced seven other swimmers in heat two of the 100 m butterfly. He was beaten by O’Keeffe, Guam’s 28 year old, and Janko Gojkovic, Bosnia’s three-time Olympian. O’Keeffe was fast and Addadi held off by one hundredth of a second (0.01), to take third place overall.

Addadi, the son Amar and Salima Addadi, was born in Dely Ibrahim (Algiers). He comes from an athletic family and began his sporting career at nine years old. He was a recreational swimmer who swam with his brother at the local pool in the city’s suburbs until a coach noticed them and asked them to join the national team. In 1997, Addadi, from Algeria, left for the United States. He was awarded a full scholarship to Bolles School in Jacksonville. He was fluent in only French and Arabic, but he credits Bolles as his primary school to learn English and a ground for his college career. Gregg Troy was Addadi’s coach during his brief stay. He produced many top-class swimmers, including Ryan Lochte.

Addadi was a participant in the 1999 All-Africa Games, which took place in Johannesburg, South Africa. After winning the 100m backstroke title at 58.28, Addadi broke the stranglehold of the host country. He beat Benjamin Lo-Pinto from Seychelles by nearly a full length. He finished just outside the top two South African finishers in the 100m butterfly at 56.30.

Addadi attended the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in Baltimore, Maryland, where he played for the UMBC Retrievers swimming and diving team under head coach Chad Cradock. Serving as the team captain, he held the school’s records in the 100-yard backstroke (48.85), 200-yard backstroke (1:49.29), and 100-yard butterfly (48.67), and later became a prizewinner of four different records in both freestyle and medley relays. In his senior season, Addadi was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Year at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships after breaking a school record in the 100-yard butterfly. In the spring of 2002, Addadi graduated from the University with a bachelor’s degree in financial economics.
