McHenry Venaani Biography

McHenry Venaani is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on September 8, 1977 in Windhoek, Khomas Region, Namibia. McHenry Venaani, born 8 September 1977, is a Namibian politician. He is the president of Popular Democratic Movement. This party has 16 seats in Namibia’s National Assembly and one in the National Council of Namibia. Venaani was a member in good standing of the National Assembly from 2002 through 2010, and again in 2014 and 2015. He was Namibia’s youngest member of parliament at the time he was appointed in 2002.

At Venaani’s suggestion, the DTA was renamed to the Popular Democratic Movement on 4 November 2017. This happened just days after its 40th birthday. This was done in order to modernize the party and get rid of its “colonial name”.

Venaani was on the DTA electoral list before the 2009 general elections, but the party didn’t receive enough votes to allow him to re-elect himself. Venaani defeated Kaura in the 2013 DTA central committee meeting by a margin 96 to 52. He then assumed the party presidency. Venaani took over Kaura’s seat in Parliament after Kaura was expelled by the DTA in February 2014. However, Kaura brought a court case against Venaani days later. The decision was not challenged by the DTA and Kaura was reinstated as a parliamentarian and a party member. Venaani was re-elected as a top-placed DTA member in March 2015.

In the 2019 Namibian general election Venaani ran as presidential candidate of the strongest opposition party. He gathered a disappointing 5.3% of the popular vote, coming in as distant third behind Hage Geingob and Panduleni Itula. His party, however, achieved a very strong result and gained 16 seats in the National Assembly, up 11 from the previous election.
