Roy Greenslade was the managing editor at the time and later claimed that Mahmood was fired for trying to cover up an error. Mahmood consistently refuted Greenslade’s account of events. Mahmood briefly worked as a producer for David Frost’s TV-am program before joining the News of the World, 1991.

Mazher Mahmood, a British undercover journalist who was born 22 March 1963, was convicted for conspiracy to pervert justice. He worked mostly for tabloid newspapers before his conviction. He worked for the News of the World for 20 years, and the Sunday Times for 20 more. During that time, he was involved in numerous investigations, including one that resulted in a reputed 94%. For his investigation into cricket match-fixing, he was awarded Reporter of the year in 2011. He worked later for the Sun of Sunday, the successor to the News of the World, starting in 2012.

Mahmood started his career as a journalist when he was 18. He exposed family members who had pirated videos. After two weeks of work at the News of the World, Mahmood began freelancing at the Sunday People. Mahmood claims that he used the sheikh disguise to invite prostitutes into a hotel room in 1984 while attempting to expose Roger Insall, a fellow journalist.

In 1999, after a Mahmood investigation exposed the Earl of Hardwicke and another man as drug dealers, the jury sent a note to the judge explaining that they had reached their decision to convict the two men with great reluctance. They said that they would have acquitted the defendants if the law had enabled them to take into account Mahmood’s “extreme provocation” of them to sell him cocaine. The judge agreed and passed suspended sentences.

On 30 March 2006, Respect party politician George Galloway said that Mahmood, using his “fake sheikh” disguise and working for the News of the World, attempted to trap him in a sting operation at a meeting in the Dorchester Hotel with businessmen from the Middle East. Galloway said he had put off the meeting for several weeks and was suspicious from the beginning. Of the men, he wrote on his website that “neither of the two looked at all like an Islamist (which is what they later claimed to be); neither had a beard”.
