Mayumi Raheem is one of the most popular and richest Swimmer who was born on September 15, 1991 in Colombo, Western Province, Sri Lanka. She won three gold medals in the women’s 50 meters, 100 metres and 200 meters breaststroke events at the South Asian Games 2006. Her total of 11 medals includes 5 silver and 5 bronze medals. This is a record for an Asian Games athlete.

Due to her studies, she recently announced that she would not compete at the South Asian Games 2010.

She reached the semi-finals in the Women’s 50m Breaststroke at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, Melbourne, Australia. She also represented Sri Lanka at both the 2005 World Championships, and the 2006 World Short Course Championships. She finished fourth in heat at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

She was born in Singapore and completed the International Baccalaureate program at the United World College of South East Asia. She previously lived in Sri Lanka, New Zealand and. She finished second in the Singapore National Open Championships 2006 behind an American-based Singaporean swimmer. This resulted her becoming the fastest woman to swim 200m breaststroke in Singapore. From 2004 to 2007, she was a member at Singapore Swimming Club, where she trained with Jaan Murphy, an Australian coach, who she publicly credits for her success. After Coach Murphy’s return to Australia, she swam for Swimfast Aquatic under former Singaporean national swimmer David Lim before moving to the Grassroots Club where she trained under Jack Simon.

At the age of eight, she began swimming and has continued to swim ever since. She was the captain of Sri Lanka’s swimming team at 2006 Asian Games.
