Since January 1, 2006 she has been the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto. She is the first female dean of this Faculty of Law. She succeeded Ronald J. Daniels who became President of Johns Hopkins University. She was appointed 15th Provost at Trinity College, Toronto on July 1, 2014. He was the Rawlinson Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford University.

She then taught secondary school in Prince George, British Columbia, before going to law school.
