Maya Hanoomanjee is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on October 5, 1952 in Mauritius. Santi Bai ‘Maya” Hanoomanjee GCSK, Hindi:maayaa hnumaanjii (Born GHOSE on 5 October 1952), is a High Commissioner of Mauritius. She is a Mauritian politician, and a former Civil Servant. She was the speaker of Mauritius’ National Assembly from December 2014 to November 2019. She was the first woman to hold the constitutional office, and was therefore the highest-ranking female in the republic. She was a former Minister for Health in Mauritius, serving from 11 May 2010, until the dissolution of the coalition government of Mauritian Labour Party & Militant Socialist Movement in July 2011. She was a member of Navin Ramgoolam’s Cabinet. From 2005 to 2014, she was the 2nd Member of Parliament in constituency 14 Black River & La Savanne. She is a member in good standing of the MSM, and she was the first woman to be elected Speaker.
The ministry of President Juganauth, Pravind Juganauth, the Finance Minister and Hanoomanjee were all accused of purchasing a Medpoint Clinic owned by their family. They also were accused of abusing their office. They all denied the allegation. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ICAC), which was investigating charges that she had caused losses to the state of 144 millions Rupees, by approving the purchase of a family-owned clinic to become a government geriatric center. Six MSM party ministers resigned from cabinet to condemn Hanoomanjee’s arrest. The Director of Public Prosecutions was considered to be equivalent to the prosecutor and relieved Hanoomanjee on 11 April 2013. This was due to insufficient corroborating evidence. Hanoomanjee’s child Naila Hanoomanjee was named Chief Executive Officer of State Property Development Company Ltd. (SPDC), managing the Port Louis Waterfront, and Mahebourg Waterfront in October 2015. Hanoomanjee denied that she was being accommodated by the law. She stated that her daughter, Naila Hanoomanjee, was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the State Property Development Company Ltd (SPDC), manager of the Port Louis Waterfront and Mahebourg Waterfront during October 2015.
She joined the Militant Socialist Movement party (MSM) in 2005. In 2005, she was nominated in Black River & La Savanne constituency 14 by her party. She won the elections. In 2010, she won the same constituency and was elected Minister of Health. She served as the Minister of Health from May 2010 to July 2011, when the coalition government of Mauritian Labour Party & Militant Socialist Movement collapsed. During her time as a minister, she was a member of Navin Ramgoolam’s Cabinet. She was an opposition member from 6 October 2014 to that date. She was elected speaker of the National assembly in December 2014. This is her first time holding this constitutional office, and she is therefore the second-ranked female in the republic after President Ameenah Guirib. On 14 August 2015, she was elected President of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (Africa Region). This was at the 46th CPA Africa Region Conference in Kenya. On 12 March 2015, she was awarded the highest honor in the country and promoted to the rank Grand Commander of Star and Key (GCSK). This is for her public and political service.

Hanoomanjee was born to the Ghose family, which is related to the Ballah families. She is Sarojini’s first cousin and Anerood Jugnauth’s sister-in-law. She is also the second cousin of Pravind Jugnauth, the current prime minister. Her primary education was at Aryan Vedic Aided Schools in Vacoas. She then went on to secondary school at Queen Elizabeth College, Rose Hill, and finally completed her university degree at University of Mauritius. From 1971 to 2005, she was a civil servant and retired in May 2005 as a permanent secretary. She was the Chairperson, 1996-2004, of the Tea Board. In 1998, she was also the Chairperson, 1998-2004 of the Farmers Service Commission. From 1997 to 2004, she was Chairperson at the Sugar Planter’s Mechanical Pool Corporation. In 2004, from 1997 to 2004, she was Chairperson at the Mauritius Sugar Authority. From 2001 to 2005, she was the first Chairperson in the Mauritius Revenue Authority. She served as a member of various boards. She represented Mauritius at ACP-EU level on Sugar Protocol issues. She also participated in lobbying missions in EU countries for Sugar Protocol.
Hanoomanjee, a former civil servant, retired as a Permanent Secretary in 2005 just before joining the MSM. In that capacity, she was the Permanent Secretary for Finance and Health. On the 2015 national day, President Kailash Purryag presented her with a medal and made her Grand Commander of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean. Maya Hanoomanjee is a 40-year-old married mother to three daughters.
