His partner since his time at King’s College and wife since 2003 was Georgina Henry, former deputy editor of The Guardian and editor of guardian.co.uk, the newspaper’s website; Henry died in February 2014 from sinus cancer. Bennett discussed the loss of his wife in a BBC Radio 3 programme, Private Passions.
In 2006, Bennett’s novel Zugzwang, was published week-by-week in the British Sunday newspaper The Observer. The novel was written in weekly instalments with new chapters being submitted to the newspaper close to publication date. Each chapter was accompanied by illustrations by British artist Marc Quinn.
King’s College London gave him a first-class honours in History. In 1987, he completed a doctorate in crime and law enforcement 17th-century England. This material was used by him in Havoc in its Third Year. In the same year, he was appointed as a researcher for Jeremy Corbyn MP (later Leader of Labour Party), in a move that caused controversy and security concerns.

Bennett was 19 years old when he was convicted of the murder of Inspector William Elliott by a Diplock court. The incident occurred in 1974 at The Diamond shopping center in Rathcoole. This was close to his Merville Garden Village home. In 1975, his conviction was declared unjust and he was freed from Long Kesh prison.
Bennett was writing to Iris Mills, a New Zealand national, in Huddersfield. He moved there after his release from Long Kesh. There he became involved in the anarchist paper Black Flag. Bennett was taken into custody there along with Mills, a New Zealander. After an illegal attempt was made to deport them, Bennett and Mills moved to Paris, London, and then to Paris. He was again arrested in 1978 for conspiring to cause explosions with persons unknown. He spent 16 months on remand. Bennett defended himself and was acquitted with his co-defendants in 1979. Bennett wrote a fictionalized account of the 1992 ‘Persons Unknown Official Secrets Act trial, The Second Trial. The Poison Girls, anarcho-punk group, recorded the song “Persons Unknown” and released it jointly with Crass as a single to raise funds for Bennett’s Wapping Autonomy Center. Bennett and Mills found funding and rebuilt the Centre. However, it was vandalized by punk fans.
Bennett has published five novels and two non-fiction works. It was his third novel, The Catastrophist, that brought him into the public eye. This novel was set in the Belgian Congo just before independence, with the rise and fall of Patrice Lumumba. Critics hailed the novel, which drew comparisons to Graham Greene, Joseph Conrad and John le Carré’s African novel, The Constant Gardener. It was nominated for the Whitbread Award in 1998. Bennett’s fourth novel, Havoc, in its Third Year, was published in 2004. It is a dark tale of Puritan fanaticism, set in a town in northern England in the 1630s, in the decade before the English Civil War.
