Bossis was born in Saint-Andre-Treize-Voies, Vendee. Bossis was a long- standing starter for FC Nantes during its most successful period in the 1970s and 1980s. He was primarily known as a fullback on the left flank but also played various defense roles. During the championship-winning seasons of 1977 and 1980, Bossis was primarily at the right back. Thierry Tusseau usually started on the left flank, but he made the left back his own starting position in 1981. Bossis was a key player in Nantes’ success between 1976 and 1981. In 1983, the club won a third title and finished ten points better than Girondins Bordeaux. Bossis made the move to Paris in 1985. However, the Parisian club only achieved modest success despite heavy spending on players like Pierre Littbarski and Enzo Francescoli. Bossis was back in Nantes for one last season in 1990. He lined up alongside Marcel Desailly, the future French international, before retiring from playing.
Bossis represented France for ten more years. He appeared at the 1982, 1978 and 1986 World Cups. The latter two editions reached the semifinals. Most notable is his missed penalty against West Germany in 1982’s World Cup semifinal. Although the score was tied at 4-4 after Bossis missed his next penalty, Horst Hrubesch scored the last penalty to send Germany to the final. Bossis was also a key member of the French team which won the European Championship in 1984 on their home turf. He held the French record for caps from 1985 to 1992. Manuel Amoros, his fellow defender, set a new record with 82 caps. He also held the French record for matches played in FIFA World Cup, with 15 caps. This was later surpassed by Fabien Barrthez in 2006.
After he retired in 1991, Bossis briefly embraced a career as a football executive, heading the Coupe de France Central Commission (1993–1995) before he joined Saint-Étienne as sporting director (1996–1997). He then reinvented himself as a TV commentator, working first for TPS, then for Orange Sport and since 2014 for BeIn Sport.
