Peter Litchfield, a former professional footballer and father of Litchfield, is his son.
He won the 400m IM at the Olympic trials 2016 in a time 4:12.05, which was just under the qualifying time for Rio 2016. Later, he competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and finished 5th in his heat. He improved his personal record to finish 4th in the Olympic finals.
In the Autumn of 2019 he was member of the inaugural International Swimming League swimming for the Energy Standard International Swim Club, who won the team title in Las Vegas, Nevada, in December.

Andrew Wallace was Litchfield’s coach at Doncaster Dartes Swimming Club. He then moved to City Of Sheffield’s top junior team in 2013. He was soon able to qualify for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in the 400m Individual Medley. Max is now a trainee at the Energy Standard Loughborough National Centre. .
Litchfield participated in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where he placed 12th in the 400m individual Medley and the 1500m Freestyle. In the same year, he also participated in the European Championships in Berlin where he was fourth in the 400m IM final. He was a former World Junior Champion and he swam with the 4×200 m freestyle team to gold in Dubai in 2013.
In 2018, he suffered an injury to the shoulder and withdrew from the Commonwealth Games. At the 2018 European Championships, Litchfield won a bronze in the 200 metre individual medley, his first major medal since the injury. He then won a silver in the 400 metre individual medley.
