Maurice Iwu Biography

Maurice Iwu is one of the most popular and richest Academic who was born on April 21, 1950 in Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria. Maurice Mmaduakolam Iwu, born 21 April 1950, Umuezeala in Umukabia, Ehime Mbano, Imo State. For his secondary education, he attended Saint Pius X College in Bodo- Ogoni. He received a Master of Pharmacy degree from the University of Bradford in 1976 and a Ph.D. in 1978. He was a World Health Organisation (WHO), Visiting Scholar at Dyson Perrins Laboratory University of Oxford (1980), Fulbright senior scholar, Ohio State University, and won the U.S National Research International Prize for Ethnobiology 1999. He was Professor of Pharmacognosy, University of Nigeria Nsukka (1984-1993).

Abubakar Rimi, the Attorney General, called for Maurice Iwu’s resignation in December 2008. He cited irregularities in the 2008 presidential election. The Attorney General Michael Aondoakaa opposed the sacking of Maurice Iwu, despite his criticisms of Iwu’s conduct in the 2007 elections.

President Olusegun Obasanjo appointed Iwu as the INEC commissioner for Imo State. He succeeded Abel Guobadia to the position of Chairman of INEC in June 2005. Iwu declared soon after his appointment that foreign observers would be permitted during elections. Politicians and civil society groups condemned this decision and demanded his immediate resignation.

Maurice Mmaduakolam Iwu, a Nigerian Professor in Pharmacognosy was born April 21, 1950. He was elected Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission in June 2005 and was then removed from office in April 2010.

Professor Iwu was the President of the International Society of ethnobiology (1996 to 2002), member and ex-President of Nigerian Society of Pharmacognosy and Member of American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and Member of International Society for Medicinal Plant Research. He was the Executive Director of Bioresources Development and Conservation Program and Senior Research Associate at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Washington D.C.

In March 2009, the Vice-Chairman of Senate Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Maina Maaji Lawan spoke against a motion that questioned the integrity of INEC Chairman Maurice Iwu. Iwu’s tenure was due to expire on 13 June 2010. However, on 28 April 2010, Acting President Goodluck Jonathan, who has committed himself to pursuing electoral reform, removed Iwu from office.
