O’Toole joined the U.S. Women’s National Water Polo Team at age 17. From 1978 to 1994, Mo (as she was called by her teammates) was a consistent figure on the team, except for 1991 when Kelly was born. She won a gold medal in the 1979 FINA world cup. Maureen was able to rejoin the US team in 1997 after she retired. She helped qualify the US women’s squad to compete in Sydney. She was 39 years old and was the oldest water polo player. At the Olympic Games, she helped the US women win a silver medal.

From 1995 to 1997 she coached water polo at Rio Hondo College, Whittier, California, and at UC Berkeley. She also holds a master’s in education. Maureen O’Toole was named Coach of the Year 2006 by the United States Olympic Committee. This honor is the first time a female water polo coach has been awarded this distinction.
