Before marrying Clark in 1973, McTeer was a clerk in Clark’s office. McTeer was controversial when Clark became the leader of The Progressive Conservative Party of Canada (in 1976). This was due to feminism being a relatively recent social phenomenon at the time. She also wanted to keep her surname and continue her career. McTeer was one of the guests of honour at an official luncheon. McTeer was seated next to the Queen Mother. McTeer’s fellow women teased her by calling her “Mrs. Clark” every time they saw her. McTeer, however, didn’t and the Queen Mother was not bothered. McTeer took McTeer to her car and left with the following words: “Good luck… Ms. McTeer.” McTeer is the only Canadian prime minister’s wife to not assume any part her husband’s name as of 2015. Sophie Gregoire Trudeau and Laureen Teskey Harper, both of whom had their own surnames, switched to McTeer’s after McTeer’s controversy.
McTeer was the daughter of John and Bea McTeer. McTeer was taught hockey by her father and her older sister Colleen. This led to McTeer’s childhood dream to play in the NHL. Her father reminded her of the fact that NHL hockey is not for girls. This was what sparked her commitment to feministism. She gave up her academic and debate talents to focus on her academic achievements, which led to her being awarded a scholarship to the University of Ottawa. She received her undergraduate degree in 1973, and her law degree in 1976 from Ottawa. While there, she was the features editor of The Fulcrum student newspaper and was also a member the English debate team as well as the Progressive Conservative Campus Club. McTeer received an MA in biotechnology and law from the University of Sheffield. In 2008, she was awarded an honorary LLD.
Maureen is a lawyer, specializing in health policy. She has also been a professor at various universities. In the 1988 federal election, McTeer ran as a Progressive Conservative candidate in Carleton—Gloucester, hoping to get elected alongside her husband. Despite the party’s re-election victory, McTeer was not elected in her riding, coming second to the Liberal Candidate, Eugène Bellemare. As of 2016, however, she remains the only spouse of a former Canadian Prime Minister to have run for political office herself.
