In 1999, she was elected Honorary Secretary of Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP). She was elected chair of the RCGP Council in May 2013. She assumed the role in November 2013. During her tenure as chair of RCGP Council, she frequently spoke out about problems affecting general practices. She acknowledged that some of these problems could be attributed to the “pull from London and the South East”. She commented on the need for better distribution of the medical workforce and suggested that some incentives might be possible to attract doctors to certain areas. In November 2016, her term as Chair of the Council was over. Helen Stokes-Lampard succeeded her as Chair.
She joined Connecting for Health in 2007. She is Clinical Director for Patient Safety at the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC).
In 2009, she received the RCGP Foundation Council Award for meritorious services to general practice.
She was a general practitioner in Lincoln from 1985 to 2000. She was active in teaching early in her career.
