Stockport offered him a twelve-month contract, but he was also injured in the first half 2008-09 season. McNeil was sent off just before the start of the second match. He sustained a knee injury while training and was unable to continue the season. McNeil returned to Colchester United on 18/10, scoring in the first period, but was hospitalized with a head injury sustained in the second. McNeil was injured for another month, but returned to the first team to play a few games in November. However, a recurrence with a back problem caused him to miss the pre-match warmup against Gillingham on 9/12. He then had to be forced to leave the match and sit on the sidelines for six weeks. McNeil was out on contract at the close of the season. The club went into administration and the management were made redundant. McNeil wasn’t offered another contract.
He signed for Chester in June 2011, after he left Southport the previous month. McNeil suffered a knee injury in his first pre-season friendly against Tranmere, and missed the rest of pre-season. He then managed to recover in time to make the first game of the season, where he scored on his debut. His season would be cut short due to a career threatening knee injury, which meant he would miss the last 10 games of the season, However, he still went on to win Supporters player of the year and the Managers player of the year. The team also went on to secure the league title and win their second successive promotion in two years.
Stockport saw him make 22 appearances, scoring six goals, and he was awarded the player of the Month for September and November. This award came before a 2007-08 injury that interrupted his season. Stockport’s last game of the season saw him return briefly, as a substitute in the final minutes of their Wembley win.

After impressing in a Cup tie for Woodley Sports against Stalybridge Celtic, he was quickly taken up by them in 1999. He went on to win an Historic Treble as well as being promoted to the conference National. McNeil attracted the attention of many league clubs during the season, Bury being the most prominent. Highlight of the season was his appearance at Chelsea in round three of the FA Cup. He also assisted on the goal that resulted in Chelsea’s 6-1 defeat. He also had a great season and helped keep the club in football league. He was offered a contract extension at Macclesfield but he joined Stockport County in July 2007. McNeil signed for Southport on 12 May 2010, after he left Stockport County earlier on in the year. He made a good start to the season, hitting two goals against Kidderminster in a thrilling 4–3 away win, but soon after that he had a groin injury which kept him out for a few weeks. When he came back he helped the club to a money spinning home tie, live on ITV with league one side Sheffield Wednesday in the first round of the FA Cup. McNeil and his teammates battled on in the league but they couldn’t do enough to keep the club from finishing fourth bottom of the Conference. However the club stayed up because Rushden was kicked out of the league due to breaking the rules.
