Sweet Thames, set in London in 1849, tells the story about the trials of a brilliant drainage engineer whose wife is killed in a cholera epidemic. It was awarded the John Llewellyn Rhys prize in 1993.

English Passengers is the story of an expedition of religious-scientific scientists who seek to discover the Garden of Eden in Tasmania. This land has suffered a terrible loss of aboriginal culture under the British colonial rule. More than 20 voices are used to tell the story. It was nominated for the Whitbread Book of the Year Award 2000 and was also a finalist in the Booker Prize 2000 and the Australian Miles Franklin Award. The book was translated into French and won the Relay Prix d’Evasion in France. Kneale stated that J. G. Farrell was a writer he admired when he interviewed him in 2001. He wrote about the British Empire – and scathingly – back in the 1970s, when few Brits wanted to reflect on the worst parts of Britain’s past.

Kneale spent the next few years primarily in London and travelled extensively. He also spent a year in Rome and wrote Inside Rose’s Kingdom, his second novel. He moved to Oxford in 1990, and wrote two historical novels, Sweet Thames, and English Passengers. He was also interested in languages and tried to learn Spanish, Romanian (Ethiopian), Albanian, and Albanian. He married Shannon Russell in 2000 and moved to Italy with Shannon’s family. He now lives in Rome with his wife and their two children.
