Matthew Foreman is one of the most popular and richest Mathematician who was born on March 21, 1957 in Los Alamos, New Mexico, United States. This led naturally to the application of descriptive set theory to classification issues in ergodic theories. F. Beleznay was his first contribution to this area. It showed that classical collections are more complex than the Borel hierarchy. The same result was soon followed by a proof that measure-preserving transformations can be achieved with generalized discrete spectrum. Working with Benjamin Weiss, Daniel Rudolph Foreman, we proved that there is no residual class for measure-preserving transforms that can have algebraic variables and that the isomorphism relationship on ergodic measures-preserving transforms is not Borel. The negative result ended a program that von Neumann had proposed in 1932. Foreman and Weiss extended this result to show that 2-torus smooth-area-preserving diffeomorphisms are not classifiable.

Foreman, in addition to his mathematical work is an avid sailor. His family and he sailed the sailboat Veritas (a C&C), from North America to Europe in 2000. They sailed Veritas from 2000 to 2008 to the Arctic, Shetland Islands and Scotland. Fastnet Rock, Irish, and Celtic seas were notable high points. There were also many passages such as the Maelstrom and Stad. Pentland Firth and Loch Ness. They sailed further south through the Chenal du Four, Raz de Sein and across the Bay of Biscay to Cape Finisterre. Foreman and his family entered Gibraltar and then circumnavigated Western Mediterranean, making stops in Barcelona and Tunisia, Sicily and Sicily. Foreman, his son and a guest crew circumnavigated Newfoundland in 2009. Foreman won the Ullman Trophy twice for his sailing skills.

1998, Foreman was invited to speak at the International Congress of Mathematicians Berlin.

Foreman began to be interested in measure theory, and ergodic theories in the 1980s. Randall Dougherty and Foreman solved the Marczewski Problem (1930). He showed that there was a Banach–Tarski decomposition for the unit ball in the which all pieces have Baire’s property (see Banach–Tarski paradox). One consequence is that there is a decomposition in the unit ball of an open dense set into disjoint sets, which can be rearranged using isometries to create two open dense subsets. Friedrich Wehrung was the one who showed that the Hahn–Banach theorem implied an existence of a non–Lebesgue-measurable set. This is even though there wasn’t any other form.

Foreman was born in Los Alamos (New Mexico) and received his Ph.D. in 1980 from the University of California Berkeley under Robert M. Solovay. His dissertation title was Large Cardinals, Strong Model Theoretical Transfer Properties.
