Dicks was born in Blackstone, Massachusetts. He was a Boy Scout and a pole vaulter. He also played several instruments, including the flute, bassoon and drums. He began his career at McDonald’s at the age of 16. He was promoted to manager at the age of 17. Dicks was involved in a head-on collision with a car on December 23, 1988. Paramedics arrived on the scene and found Dicks without pulse or respiration. They began CPR. Before reaching the hospital, he was eventually revived. Dicks attributes this near-death experience to his determination and drive to succeed. Dicks left his home at the age of 18 to continue working in the restaurant industry, including McDonald’s for many years.

Dicks was robbed while managing a McDonald’s in Brockton, MA in 1993. Dicks was left with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTS) for over a decade after the incident. Dicks credits this incident with launching his writing career and sending him to college.
