McMahon, a 6-foot-1 shooting guard was a regular player for Appalachian State between 1996 and 2000. He was also a coach under Buzz Peterson. Over his three years with the Mountaineers, McMahon posted a record of 65-25. In 2000, he was able to make it to the NCAA Tournament. McMahon scored 6.9 points over those 90 games and made 37.5 percent (124 out of 331) of his 3-point attempts. McMahon graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2000 with a marketing degree.

McMahon played his professional basketball career and stayed at Appalachian State in 2000-01 as a student assistant coach for men’s basketball under Houston Fancher. McMahon returned to Peterson in 2000-01 as a graduate assistant at Tennessee and then as an assistant coach under Fancher. He joined Peterson again in 2010, this time as an assistant coach at UNC-Wilmington. In 2011, he was appointed assistant coach at Murray State by Steve Prohm.

McMahon’s third Racer team posted a 26–6 record, winning Ohio Valley Conference regular-season and tournament championships. They were awarded a 12 seed in the 2018 NCAA Tournament, where they fell in the first round to West Virginia, 85–68. After the season, he was named National Association of Basketball Coaches District 19 Coach of the Year.
