After the injury to Rob Gronkowski, the Patriots signed Lengel on November 2, 2016.

On October 10, 2017, Lengel was signed to the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad. He was promoted to the active roster on October 25, 2017.

Lengel was tendered by the Patriots on March 7, 2017. He was waived/injured on August 27, 2017, and placed on injured reserve. He was released on September 30, 2017 with an injury settlement.

After Northeastern University’s 2009 football shut down, Lengel was redshirted in his freshman year. He then transferred to Eastern Kentucky the next year. Over five seasons, he played in 37 games and caught 33 passes for 361 yards. In the 2012 season opener, he tore his ACL and was unable to play the rest of the season. After the 2013 season opener, he suffered a second torn ACL and was unable to play the entire season.

Lengel signed as an undrafted agent with the Cincinnati Bengals on May 8, 2015. On September 5, 2015, he was released and signed to the practice team the following day. This was where he spent the entire rookie season. On January 11, 2016, he signed a reserve/future deal with the Bengals.

Lengel was released by the Bengals on September 3, 2016, and was signed to the practice squad during the next day.
