Matt Knowles, born October 7, 1970, is an ex-American soccer defender who played indoor soccer for most of his life. He also played in the American Professional Soccer League (APSL) in the 1990s, and Major League Soccer.

As Major League Soccer (MLS), was just beginning its operations in 1996, Knowles’ indoor success attracted attention. The MetroStars selected Knowles (ninth overall), in the Inaugural Player Draft in February 1996. Knowles signed with MetroStars but continued indoor soccer in the MLS off-season.

In 2001, the Harrisburg Heat picked up Knowles in the dispersal draft. That year, the NPSL disbanded and the surviving NPSL franchises created a new league, the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL). At some time in 2002, Knowles moved from the Heat to the Kansas City Comets. On October 2, 2002, the Comets traded Knowles to the Philadelphia KiXX in exchange for Matt Caution. However, Knowles again experienced a considerable number of injuries and spent most of the season on the injured-reserved list.

Knowles had great success with the Wave but he was not happy with Wave’s ownership. He expressed a desire for trade. The Wave agreed to Knowles’ wishes and traded him to Cleveland Crunch on December 26, 1996 for Glenn Carbonara and Todd Dusosky and cash. While in Cleveland, he was hurt and did not see much playing time. Knowles signed as a free agent for the Philadelphia KiXX on July 29, 1997 after he purchased the remaining three years from his contract with Crunch. Knowles was awarded the Defender of the Year for the 1997-1998 season. This was his first season in Philadelphia. Knowles was traded to the Detroit Rockers after one more season with KiXX. Knowles was a Detroit Rocker for two seasons before the Rockers folded at end of 2000-2001 season.

Knowles was born in Philadelphia, and attended Archbishop Ryan High School between 1985 and 1988. According to most sources, Knowles became a professional right after graduating high school. Knowles played at Wake Forest University, but he left after two seasons to become a professional soccer player. He signed with the Penn-Jersey Spirit, American Professional Soccer League (APSL). Knowles played 19 games with the Spirit in 1991 and scored one goal. After the 1991 season, the Spirit was disbanded and Knowles transferred to Fort Lauderdale Strikers in 1992 for the APSL season. Knowles was an integral part the Spirit but he saw only three games with Strikers. He moved to Tampa Bay Rowdies in 1993 where he played nine more games. Knowles signed with Philadelphia Kixx in 1997, making it the most contracted indoor team at 130,000 per season. For the next eight seasons, he played indoor and outdoor.

Knowles signed in 1990 with the Illinois Thunder expansion of the National Professional Soccer League. He played two seasons for Illinois and was awarded NPSL Defender Of The Year honors for 1991-1992. He scored 45 goals in 40 games that season as a defender. Knowles was awarded the Defender of the year award and selected to the All-NPSL team. Knowles was traded to the Milwaukee Wave after Knowles played three games in Denver, following the 1991-1992 season. He tore the anteriorcruciate ligament in the right knee in the fall 1993. He was out of five of the nineteen games in 1993-1994 due to this injury. He rebounded the following season and gained ninety-four point, which made him the second highest Wave scorer. He played his best in 1995-1996, earning his second Defender’s of the Year title.

Following his being drafted by the MetroStars in February 1996, Knowles spent two and a half seasons with the team. While he played nearly every game of the 1996 season, he was injured during the 1996-1997 NPSL season. This led to his sporadic playing time with the MetroStars during the 1997 and 1998 seasons. On July 1, 1998 traded to the expansion Miami Fusion for a third round College Draft pick. He played out the remainder of the 1998 seasons with the Fusion, but played in only three games. The Fusion also sent him on loan to the Staten Island Vipers for one game. At the end of the 1998 season, Knowles left outdoor soccer to concentrate on his more successful indoor career.
