Geiger signed the contract in 2001 his team the Philadelphia 76ers but knee injuries caused him to quit in 2002 following a 10-year career. Over the course of his time in the league, he averaged 9.2 scores and 5.7 rebound per game.
At the end of summer 2000 Matt Geiger’s insistence on not waiving the $5 million trade kicker provision in his contract halted the four-team agreement with Philadelphia as well as the Hornets and the Detroit Pistons and the L.A. Lakers which would have the Lakers sent All-Star star Allen Iverson to the Pistons. Geiger was suspended for two games in the 2000-01 season due to an infraction to the NBA/NBPA’s policy on steroids.

In January 1992 Geiger was in his graduation year from Georgia Tech, his fraternal twin Mark Geiger was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease , at 22. As his brother lost hair due to treatment, Matt Geiger shaved his head in the course of his NBA career to help his brother.
His college career was a success and led Geiger to be chosen as a player by Miami Heat in the second round (42nd selection in the overall draft) in the 1992 NBA Draft. He was a player with the NBA for 10 seasons between 1992-2002 , playing for three squads: Miami Heat, Charlotte Hornets as well as Philadelphia 76ers.
Geiger currently resides in Tarpon Springs, Florida where he is a real estate investor. His 28,000-square-foot (2,600 m) estate, reported as the largest in the county, sold on January 3, 2011 for 8 million dollars.
