Massouda Jalal is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on January 5, 1962 in Kapisa, Afghanistan. In Gul Bahar, Kapisa Province, one of seven children, Jalal moved to Kabul to study at a high school. She then went to Kabul University, where she was a part of faculties until in which the Taliban government forced her out. Jalal was a psychiatrist and pediatrician also worked in various Kabul hospitals. She also worked, following her departure from the faculty at the university, was employed as an United Nations employee within the World Food Programme. The husband of Jalal is law professor of Kabul University; they have three children.

Massouda Jalal, a political figure from Afghanistan and was minister of women’s affairs from the month of October until July 2006. In addition, she was the sole female candidate in 2004’s Afghan elections for president. Her background includes an instructor in Kabul University, and a UN World Food Programme worker.

Being an outsider in the power structure of Afghanistan, Jalal declared her independence from warlords as well as the oppressive past regimes. While many of the contenders for the Afghan president resigned in the run-off and demanded an election boycott due to reports of irregularities in voting at certain polling locations, Jalal was one of the few candidates to not participate in the protest. An exit poll conducted during the elections of October 2004 revealed Jalal getting around 7 percent of the votes among Afghan women.

While she did not participate in political affairs in her time in the Taliban regime, Jalal emerged after the dissolution of the Taliban in 2001 as an influential advocate for the position that women play in Afghan society. As a representative from her Kabul neighborhood in 2002’s loya jirga, her candidature was put forward to head Afghanistan by acting as the president interim but she came in an unintentionally distant second behind Hamid Karzai, who received only 171 votes from the 1575 delegate. The Dr. Massoda Jalal served as Minister of Women’s Affairs from October 2004 until July of 2006 and has since been vocally critical of the Karzai administration for not significantly in advancing the status of women.

Jalal was awarded 1.1 percent vote during the 2004 election, putting her 6th out of 17 candidates of males. She was a part of the Karzai Administration from October 2004 until July 2006, and was serving as the Minister of Women’s Affairs within the Cabinet.

In January 2009 an article by Ahmad Majidyar of the American Enterprise Institute included Jalal on a list of fifteen possible candidates in the 2009 Afghan Presidential election. Although Majidyar wrote that Jalal had said she would run again, she did not run. Two other women Dr. Frozan Fana and Shahla Atta did run. Between the two of them they got a smaller share of the popular vote than Jalal got on her own.
